YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE ENERGY TRANSITION: AT OMC-MED ENERGY CONFERENCE
THE HACKATHON DEDICATED TO GOAL 7
'AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY' OF THE UN AGENDA 2030

RAVENNA - Start ups, young professionals, students. The 2021 edition of OMC-Med Energy Conference expands the audience of stakeholders with whom to address the issue of the energy transition.

Among the new initiatives launched for this purpose, OMC2030 Hackathon stands out, an appointment scheduled for September 29 that is open to students and young professionals aged 20 to 30.

The initiative is organized in collaboration with the Italian section of SPE and with the support of Accenture, as technical sponsor.

For this edition, the teams will be invited to develop new ideas and new solutions for the energy industry in order to achieve Goal 7 of the UN AGENDA 2030, focused on the theme of 'Affordable and clean energy'.

Indeed, Goal 7 of the 2030 Agenda supports universal access to reliable, modern and affordable energy supply services; the substantial increase in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, the doubling of the rate of increase in energy efficiency worldwide; encouraging research in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors, as well as investments in infrastructure and clean energy technologies.

In practice, using the data provided and presented by the OMC facilitators, the teams are called upon and challenged to develop a strategy, exchange ideas, share information and skills and come up with possible solutions.

"Creativity, innovation and collaboration: this is what we ask of the young people who participate in the OMC2030 Hackathon. It is they who can provide a decisive push towards the energy transition, because they are being asked to build a new world designed for the decades to come. Including young people in this process is a necessity for the full realization of the 2030 Agenda. The Hackathon forms part of the activities of the Innovation Room, one of the most important innovations of OMC 2021, because it aims to involve students from high schools and universities in order to attract them to the world of energy and make them key players in the transition to the future,” comments Monica Spada, president of OMC-Med Energy Conference.
“OMC2030 Hackathon is one of the events with which we want to involve young professionals in the sector, making them feel agents of change. Their participation in this initiative, getting involved and opening up to each other, will make it possible to come up with creative and innovative ideas to make the current energy transition a reality and to envision its future. The process of change and of rethinking energy together, as well as the first OMC 2021 goal, sees young professionals as an essential strategic resource for seizing all the opportunities for a transition to be designed and built together. Without forgetting that this opportunity for collaboration, exchange and comparison is of great value to the young people who will take part in it” says Paolo Carnevale, president of the Italian Section of SPE.

"Accenture is a player in the innovation ecosystem and has always encouraged collaboration that aims to generate shared values for meeting the great challenges of the future. The energy transition is one of these and sees us engaged in the front line alongside partners, companies and institutions. We carry out this commitment together with the 17,000 people who work at Accenture in Italy, of which over 60% are millennials. This is why, together with OMC Med Energy Conference, we are pleased to support a hackathon dedicated to the major issues of sustainability and aimed at young people, the key players in the new scenarios that the energy transition will be able to open up” said Fausto Torri, Managing Director, Energy Industry Accenture Italy.
